Note from Cynthia: I was so impressed with the wines I tasted, the people I met, and the discussion at the Dão lunch in Viseu in July, that I have invited Mario Rui Ferreira to use my blog to present Quinta da Falorca and tell us about the harvest in the Dão. From here, I will let Mario tell you more.
About Falorca wines: Quinta da Falorca was formed by the Costa Barros de Figueiredo family, and continues to produce wine after more than five generations. Located in the Dão, Silgueiros is in the heart of the River Dão, 10 miles south from Viseu. The quinta has a productive area of 13 hectares of vineyards, that lie over the hill slope of the river, facing south with total exposure to the sun. Given its exceptional conditions, Quinta da Falorca also has another 10 ha, providing an agricultural and forest area with olive, hazel-nut and pine trees. At the moment the average yearly production is 50,000 bottles of wine.
Our vineyards are an excellent representation of the region, where we work on a daily basis to get the best grapes that allow us to make unique wines, that express the characteristics of the terroir, the on-going learning process and evolution year after year, following the more natural wine making processes. We make wines that are true to the grapes and the land, that are full of fruit, elegance and freshness, a few un-oaked and some with a minimal use of oak. We let the wines speak for themselves.
About me, Mario Rui Ferreira. After several years working in financial companies, selling in corporate markets and directing branches and sales teams, always with my passion for wine globally, and for the Dão in particular, mainly for the elegance of its wines, the beauty of the landscape with very small vineyards sort of hidden amongst the pine trees, and also for the friendly people, in 2005 I started what I reckon as my global wine world learning process at Quinta da Falorca, with my friend Pedro Barros de Figueiredo, a professional colleague that instantaneously became a personal friend, together with his father, mentor, tutor and friend Carlos Figueiredo. We created together a company, Wine & Joy, to sell Falorca wines abroad, and started to be present in several international fairs where we met very interesting people and told the stories of our wines, whilst consistently learning and discussing everything from winter to autumn, in the vineyards and in the cellar. That and a few trips to the countries where we sell wine, is our reality now. Soon I will let you know about this year’s harvest. Our first white is now slowly fermenting in the vats.
